With Devils Tower looming behind us, Lisa and I take a walk in Prairie Dog Town, the 40-acre homestead of thousands of these cute little critters, the prairie dog. Based on a video she once saw, Lisa decides to call out to these gophers.
“Allen! Allen!” she yells to them.
“What are you doing?” I ask her.
“C’mon, they totally looked.”
I’ll tell you what, the way they responded — yes, they did totally look — most of them must have been named Allen. Half of them stood up on their hind legs and snapped to attention. Lisa’s got the talent.
I can anticipate the conversation once we get home. A friend asks Lisa, “What did you do on vacation?”
Lisa would say, “I yelled to prairie dogs. Made friends.”
