Down here in Penn’s Woods, we are used to painted blazes on trees. These make it sort of unmistakable as to where the trail goes. But what do you do when there are no trees, such as you get above tree line? You could paint blazes on the rock. That’s not uncommon, but something about that feels discourteous, disrespectful. Come colder weather, those painted rocks will be buried under snow for, oh, six months or so anyway, so that’s only a seasonal solution.
