The mountains are splendid, breathtaking in Zion National Park. The squirrels and chipmunks are uncommonly bold, stopping just short of asking for food in complete English sentences. The mule deer, smaller cousins of our familiar white tails, have enormous ears to help keep themselves cool. They don’t run or lope, they hop! Should definitely be accompanied by xylophone music. Tons of cigar-sized lizards dart across our path because, well, we’re in the desert. The oversized and fetching sacred datura will send you on a psychedelic trip if you ingest it. Don’t. Euphoria is not a common effect and it may also make a long-term mess of your cognitive processes and physiological functions. The good news is that it probably won’t kill you. What a treat.
