Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail
Pennsylvania
July 1995
I know a lot of people don’t like to be outside of buildings in the rain. I think even more people don’t want to go hiking or camping in the rain.
Martin, Abbie, Andi and I are driving to the Laurel Highlands for a two-day backpack trip. It is raining so hard the animals are starting to pair up. It’s raining cats and dogs, as they say. I fell into a poodle.
In spite of Dave Barry’s perspective…
It always rains on tents; rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent.
…we drive on.
While I will hike in the rain, I will not start a hike if there is lightning and thunder. Today there is lightning and thunder. But by the time we get to trailhead, the storm has moved on and the sun is brightly shining. Oh, it will be a glorious weekend.
