While hiking on the dirt path, I notice two five inch brown earthworms on the ground, near to each other. I pick one up — boys can do this without getting grossed out — and place it right on top of the other. They wriggle about, each oblivious to the identity of the other, but responding, reflexively, to the touch of whatever that identity might be, each concerned exclusively with its own welfare. Goin’ for what feels good. It reminds me of lovers in a bad relationship.

Of course, these two might be having the time of their lives.
